Music is blossoming at Abbotswood!
Year 3 have been learning a variety of songs in 2 part harmony and how to play the glockenspiels. Year 4 are learning how to compose rainforest music, taking inspiration from music from around the world. Year 5 are developing their listening and composing skills through a unit on Eleanor Rigby (The Beatles). Year 6 have composed Olympics music using graphic scores to notate their pieces, and then added these as a soundtrack to their Olympics animations.
Performances
Children are given the opportunity to regularly perform to audiences. During the Christmas period, there were 4 concerts, involving all of the children, which were hugely popular. In addition to this, the choir were invited, for the third year running, to sing at Totton Sports Club during the pensioners’ Christmas Party. Last year, a variety of schools gathered at Abbotswood for a vocal festival. This allowed children to work with other children singing in up to 4 part harmony, which is a very difficult skill. We are hoping to organise another event like this during this year. The summer production is a very exciting event at school. Last year’s production of Joseph was fantastic and we are very much looking forward to this year’s event.
Singing
Singing is a very important aspect of Abbotswood. Children take part in singing assemblies once a week where we learn a variety of new songs. Favourites amongst the children are: ‘I’m a Believer, ‘Three Little Birds’, ‘Rule the World’. We have also been learning ‘Proud’ ready for the Olympics later on this year.
A small group of year 6 choir children have been regularly visiting Forest Park School to join in with ‘Singing and Signing Choir’. This has been a fantastic opportunity for these children to learn a new skill and to make some new friends!
Instrumentalists
As well as singing, there are many children at Abbotswood that play instruments either within or outside of school. After a very successful band performance at the Year 5 Christmas production, Mr Sands will be continuing this club. It will be an opportunity for all those children who play an instrument to learn to play in an ensemble. We have also given these children the opportunity to come and watch a children’s orchestra concert in Southampton. This will be a great experience for these children.
