Using LogIT Explorer to investigate the Properties of Materials in Year 3

Question

Which Material will make the best curtains? (Least translucent)

Equipment Needed

· 8 LogIT Explorers

· 8 Torches

· Different materials (cloths)

· Recording sheet (download)

Method

1. Share the curtains question

2. Sort the class into 8 groups

3. Give out the 8 material packs to each group

4. Demonstrate the test method

5. Set up the LogIT explorers so the light is shining directly into the T end.

6. Switch the LogIT explorers on (green tick) and show the children the 3 readings they take, temperature, light in LUX and sound.

7. Explain that we are going to use the LUX light readings today

8. Take a reading with no material in between, record it on the sheet

9. Now put one of the cloths over the torch and take a new reading, record it on the sheet

10. Once everyone is finished look at the results for your group which cloth would make the best curtains why do you think this is? Record answers on the test sheet.
